Cefalù is located on the northern coast of Sicily. The origins of the town date back to the fourth century B.C. It was named by the Greeks who settled it as “Kephaloidion” and then it was Latinised as “Cephaloedium”.
In 858, the town was conquered by the Arabs who called it “Gafludi” and it was annexed to the emirate of Palermo. Then, in 1063, the town was conquered by the Normans under Count Roger.
Between 1031 e 1101, his brother, Roger I, started the conquest of Sicily and then, between 1095 e 1154, it was completed by Roger II. It was an important event not only politically but also culturally. Cefalù was rebuilt by Roger II in 1131.
The openness to Norman, Byzantine and Arab styles is noticeable in the taste for large mosaics that found their natural home in the Palatine Chapel in Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale. The most important monuments of Cefalù such as the Cathedral, and the Church of Saint George, the Cloisters date back to this period.
After the Normans, Cefalù was governed by the Swabians, Aragonese, Spanish, Savoy, Austrians and Bourbons.
In the 16th century, Cefalù was ruled by local bishops, and then, after the revolts of the Risorgimento, the town entered the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
