Dammuso del Glicine

It is an extinct crater of an ancient volcano located in the heart of the island of Pantelleria. Its turquoise colour, which becomes more and more intense as the water depth increases, will leave you breathless. The clay base, the hot, thermal and sulphur-laden waters hide numerous beneficial properties for skin care and more. The name derives from an ancient legend that tells of the goddess Venus, who, before her encounters with the god Bacchus, used to mirror herself in these magical waters. Recent excavations have brought to light a sanctuary dating back to Roman times and it is assumed that the sanctuary was dedicated to fertility and water.

The second largest district on the island of Pantelleria after the main town. It offers many activities to do and sensational landscapes. Being like a small village, it enjoys various amenities, such as the presence of the island’s only cinema, numerous restaurants from the most gourmet to local trattorias, a pharmacy, supermarkets and distinct shops. There are also various nightlife places where one can enjoy a good aperitif while admiring the island’s warm sunsets while catching a view of the African coastline. The presence of its own small harbour also makes it desirable and convenient for sailors. The seaside descents in this area vary from the easiest to the most difficult. Among the best known are: the warm waters of Sataria and Nikà, the Scauri lighthouse, Balata dei Turchi, Scalo della Vela. For mountain lovers, there is the possibility of walking on the slopes of Montagna Grande, trekking to the Favare, the natural saunas of Benikulà.

Located on the eastern side of the island of Pantelleria, it enjoys an extremely green landscape rich interraces that descend to the sea and considerable expanses of vines thanks to the fertile Mueggen soil. The presence of shops, restaurants, pharmacies and churches makes it absolutely independent and autonomous from the central town of Pantelleria. The descents to the sea are the most comfortable and well-equipped on the island, such as: The Pond of the Waves, Cala Levante, Cala Tramontana, the Elephant Arch and the Gadir Marina with its warm waters.

The name Gadir derives from Arabic and means basin of water, an appropriate name considering it is a small maritime village with its little harbour suitable for easy mooring for small boats. Known to enjoy unique and comfortable natural pools of thermal waters beneficial for the treatment of arthrosis and rheumatism. On the walls of the pools grows algae indicated for curing sinusitis, colds and minor respiratory problems. From the Gadir marina, it is possible to venture on an underwater archaeological trail, as several shipwrecks can be found in the deep waters in front of it. The rocky and wild seabed allows the marine fauna to live safely and protect themselves from external threats.
