The funicular railways of the island

The presence of hills and mountains allow us to reach many places and change the point of view. There are breath-taking panoramas in every single part of the island. Then, the good quality of the air and bright light conditions allow to see clearly. So, we suggest an alternative trip crossing the region from Eastside to Westside. Trapani and Erice village

If you are trekking lovers, it is highly recommended to explore Erice. Usually, the volunteers CAI (Italian Alpine Center) organize many excursions all around the Erice Mountain. The fog recalls fantastic fables and legends. It comes into the woods and change the perception of the space. It happens also for the Erice village: the ancient citadel is completely covered by the fog during the autumn. The atmosphere is so magic that you’ll believe to come back into the Medieval era. You can take the Erice funicular service also in the early hours of the evening. The opening time frame are different according to the day: on Monday 1pm – 8pm, from Tuesday to Friday: 8:00 am – 8:00pm and Saturday and Sunday: 9.30am – 8.30pm. The price of a return ticket is 9 euros. Than, there are two parking areas available for the customers of the cable car to Erice.

On the Etna mountain

You’ll have many opportunities to visit the Etna. Indeed, the excursions are several according to the altitude levels. The starter point is in the Rifugio Sapienza. From there, you will reach the “Monte Station” at 2,500 meters just in a few minutes. An Alpine and vulcanological guide can follow you trough the craters and in the summit area. Anyway, you remember that the journey can be made by 4×4 bus. The price is 69 euro for person, but it could be different according to your preferences. The excursion takes place only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the Etna funicular railway is open every day (depending on weather conditions and/or technical requirements)from the 08:30 am and the last departure is on 4:00 pm. If you are confident with ski and snow, remember to take information about the Etna station and track.

Taormina and Mazzarò village

On North, there is another way to admire the Etna Mountain. You can drive just for one hour or take a train and reach Porta Messina in Taormina. There, you can board on Taormina’s funicular railway to see a breathtaking landscape from the coast side. It give us the opportunity to enjoy the sea. Indeed, the cable car connects many place: Mazzarò bay, Isola Bella and Baia delle Sirene. The ticket is 3 euro for one way or 6 euro for the round-tripe, but you can buy a week ticket of 15 euro. The funicular railway is open everyday: on Monday from 09:00 am to 01:00 am and from Tuesday to Sunday from 08:00 to 01:00 am.
